Even fishermen need manners

Randy M

One of the favorite activities of boaters is fishing. In fact, numerous new boats are sold each year to first time buyers who love to fish and want to do so from the comfortable and advantageous position that only a sleek fishing boat provides. With so many newcomers and the multitudes of seasoned anglers vying for the best fishing spots, you may agree that there are certain rules of conduct that should be followed to ensure that everyone has a good time. In other words, all fishermen should mind their manners.

Let's face it; most fishing holes are located on public property, and as such, should be able to be enjoyed by all. But something that is seen all too often is that one disrespectful angler can ruin a great day of fishing for everyone else on the water. And it need not be that way. By following a few simple informal rules, each and every boating fisherman can enjoy the best fishing that Mother Nature has to offer.
Here are just a few of the manners that all boating fishermen should follow:
* Keep a respectable distance from other boaters. Do not cross or drive over the lines of others, and give other boaters a wide berth when moving from location to location.
* Learn your state's boating laws and follow them.
* Do not play loud music. If you enjoy music while fishing, wear headphones.
* Respect other people's property.
* Do not litter. Bring all of your trash home with you, and if you see trash that has been discarded by someone else, pick it up and dispose of it as well.
* Treat fish with care. Practice catch and release techniques on smaller fish, and return spawning fish back to the water.
* Do not drink alcohol while on a boat.

* If someone signals for assistance, drop everything and come to their aid.
* Observe your speed and wake to make sure you don't disturb other anglers, even those fishing from shore.
* Respect the environment. Do not spill gas or oil into the water or onto the land.

A lot of these tips are just common sense, so follow your instincts in most situations where you are unsure what the proper etiquette is. If all else fails and if you are unsure how to act in any given situation, ask someone or observe the other fishermen around you to see how they behave. After all, fishing is supposed to be fun and relaxing, and it can be even on the most crowded fishing holes if everyone minds their manners.
